MOTIVATION

You have worked your butt off, creating a routine that works and just like that it’s gone, as is your motivation to train.

ROUTINES

Last month a regular workday looked so different, you would get up for work, pack prepared meals, get outside during lunchtime, head to the gym, already motivated having found the activity you enjoy, prepare a healthy dinner, settle into your wind-down routine at the end of a long day.

Today, we get up, we’re already at work, want to eat all day, we go for a couple of walks, and need to find motivation for training at home, it all blends into one. No doubt about it, the past month has been particularly difficult for a lot of people.

We can change this, we can change the way we think about motivation, what we’re trying to achieve and succeed.

SUSTAINING MOTIVATION

Psychologists have identified three critical elements in sustaining motivation

Autonomy – You will find motivation when you feel in charge. You had no problems going to the gym a few months ago because you found an activity you enjoyed, you could see and feel the benefits from doing it and you chose to attend classes X times each week.

Your attitude when from, I have to go to the gym —> I choose to go to the gym.

Competence – When you first started you may have had doubts. You may have thought, I’m not strong enough, I’m not flexible enough, I’m too old etc. Soon enough you realised, I’m improving, my position is getting better, I’m starting to balance. Now releasing you far more capable than you initially thought.

Your thought process went from “I can’t” to I’m getting so much better my commitment is really paying off.

Value – I would think most people who exercise believe that health and fitness are a worthwhile investment. Dedicating time to exercise each week is worthwhile because it aligns with our values and benefits our lives.

What is it that you value from exercise? Improving your cardiovascular health, physical fitness, aesthetics, mental health?

Knowing these three elements are a critical part of motivation can be extremely helpful.
